The name comes from German words meaning "people's car." This name shows the goal of making cars for everyone. In the 1930s, cars were a luxury for most people. Many Germans only owned motorcycles at that time. Only one out of 50 people owned a car. The company wanted to change this by making affordable vehicles.

Designing the car was a big job. Ferdinand Porsche designed a small car for families.

He used a special shape that was rounded. This shape is called aerodynamic to help it move through air. The car had a rear engine that used air to stay cool. This is called an air-cooled engine. It did not need water to keep it from getting too hot. The car also had a round shape like a beetle.

During World War II, the factory changed what it made. It made military vehicles instead of family cars. This was a very dark time for the company. The factory used slave labor from concentration camps during the war. In 1998, the company set up a fund to help survivors. This helped them deal with the hard things that happened back then.

After the war, a British officer helped the company grow.

His name was Major Ivan Hirst. He helped restart the factory in the town of Wolfsburg. At first, the factory was in bad shape from the war. Some people thought the car was too noisy or ugly. But the company kept working and became very successful. By 1955, they had made one million Type 1 cars.
