Visible-light astronomy is the study of the stars and planets using light.

This is the same kind of light that our eyes can see. Scientists call this type of study optical astronomy. It is different from other ways of looking at space. Other ways use invisible light like radio waves or X-rays. Visible light has a wavelength between 380 and 750 nanometers.

This kind of astronomy is the oldest way to study the sky. It is also the most common way for people to join in.

There are three main ways telescopes work to make images. Refracting telescopes use glass lenses to form an image. These are often used by people at home to see the Moon. Reflecting telescopes use mirrors to catch the light instead. Scientists often use these for their research. The third kind is the catadioptric telescope. These use a mix of both lenses and mirrors. Each type has its own small problems with how light focuses. For example, refracting telescopes can sometimes show extra colors on the edges of objects.

People have been looking up for thousands of years. Long ago, they only used their own eyes to see. They even gave many constellations Greek names.

A man named Hans Lippershey was a maker of spectacles. He is often credited with inventing the first optical telescope. Galileo Galilei also played a huge role in this history. He built his own telescopes that could magnify things by 30 times. In March 1610, he published his first findings in a book. This book was called Sidereus Nuncius, or Starry Messenger.

Today, we have amazing tools like the Hubble Space Telescope.

NASA launched this telescope into orbit in 1990. It sits outside the Earth's atmosphere to get clear views. Being in space helps because the air does not blur the images. It also means the telescope can see things during the day. Hubble uses four main instruments to see light. It has helped scientists learn how fast the universe is growing. This telescope has taken some of the most detailed pictures ever.

Watching the sky can be hard if there is too much light.

This is called light pollution from cities. The Moon can also make the sky look brighter. Many astronomers go far from cities to find dark places. You can still see many things with just your eyes. The Moon is the brightest and largest object to watch. You can also see meteors, which people call shooting stars. Some planets like Venus are so bright they appear in daylight. Even the Big Dipper is easy to find in the stars.
