He is most celebrated for his sophisticated artistry and innovation within the musical film genre. His contributions to cinema were so significant that six of his films were selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. This registry protects films that are considered culturally, historically, or aesthetically important. Throughout a career spanning more than fifty years, Minnelli became a master of visual storytelling. He used color, design, and composition to transform the way movies were made and experienced.

Minnelli's path to directing was built through various artistic roles. He began as an apprentice window dresser at the Marshall Field's department store in Chicago.

In this role, he designed elaborate seasonal displays that utilized furniture and decorative antiques. He later worked as an assistant photographer for Paul Stone, a specialist in photographing celebrities. This experience was vital because it taught him how to use light to create a specific mood. He eventually transitioned into theatrical design, working as a costume and set designer for the Chicago Theatre.

His upbringing was deeply connected to the performing arts. He was born in Chicago on February 28, 1903, to Marie Émilie Odile Lebeau and Vincent Charles Minnelli. His father was a musical conductor for the Minnelli Brothers' Tent Theater, and his mother was a stage performer. Minnelli actually made his stage debut at the age of three. He performed the role of Little Willie in a production of East Lynne. His family history also included Sicilian revolutionaries. His grandfather, Vincenzo, and grand-uncle, Domenico, fled Sicily following the collapse of a provisional government in 1848. Vincenzo even spent 18 months hiding in the catacombs of Palermo before escaping to New York.

In 1940, Minnelli joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), where he would spend over 26 years. This made him the longest-tenured director in the history of the studio. He made his directorial film debut with Cabin in the Sky in 1943.

During his time at MGM, he directed several iconic musical films. He worked closely with the famous singer Judy Garland, directing her in films like Meet Me in St. Louis in 1944.

The two were married for a period, and they had a daughter, Liza, who also became a successful performer.

During the 1950s, Minnelli reached the height of his professional success. He directed a wide variety of genres, including comedies and dramas. His film An American in Paris, released in 1951, won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

His 1958 film Gigi was also a massive success. That film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Minnelli himself won the Oscar for Best Director.

These awards solidified his reputation as one of the premier directors of his era.

Despite his success, Minnelli faced challenges later in his career. By 1962, his relationship with MGM began to decline following the commercial failures of Two Weeks in Another Town and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. To maintain his creative independence, he formed his own production company called Venice Productions. Through this company, he partnered with MGM and 20th Century Fox for films like The Courtship of Eddie's Father. He continued to direct until his final film, A Matter of Time, in 1976.

This final project featured his daughter, Liza, as a star.

Minnelli's legacy is defined by his ability to merge different art forms into a single cinematic experience. He drew inspiration from impressionist and surrealist painters like Henri Matisse and Salvador Dalí. He also studied the experimental films of Jean Cocteau and the writings of Sigmund Freud. By combining these influences, he brought a level of psychological depth and visual beauty to the Hollywood musical. He passed away in 1986 at his home in Beverly Hills at the age of 83. His work remains a cornerstone of film history and continues to influence directors today.
