Vincent Lingiari was a famous leader for the Gurindji people in Australia. He was born around 1908 or 1919.

As a young man, he worked as a stockman. He worked at Wave Hill Station in the Northern Territory. This station was run by a British company called Vesteys. The work was very difficult for the Indigenous workers. They were often paid with things like beef, bread, and tobacco. Their pay was only about six dollars. This was much lower than what other workers earned.

In August 1966, Lingiari became a leader for the workers. He led a protest called the Wave Hill walk-off. This was also known as the Gurindji strike. The workers walked away from the cattle station to show they were unhappy. They wanted better pay and better working conditions. They also wanted their traditional lands back. They set up a camp at Wattie Creek, which is also called Daguragu. They said they wanted to live on their land in their own way.

The strike lasted for seven long years. During this time, more people began to support Aboriginal land rights. The fight was not just about jobs anymore. It became a big issue for the whole country. In 1975, a very important moment happened. The Prime Minister of Australia was named Gough Whitlam. He held a special ceremony for the Gurindji people. He poured local sand into Lingiari's hands. This showed that part of the land was being given back to them.

This protest helped change the laws in Australia. In 1976, the government passed the Aboriginal Land Rights Act. This law allowed Aboriginal people to claim their traditional lands. It also gave them power to talk about mining on that land. Because of his hard work, Lingiari was honored in 1976. He was named a Member of the Order of Australia. He died on 21 January 1988. He was a very important figure in the struggle for Indigenous rights.

Today, many people remember Vincent Lingiari. One of the largest areas for voting in Australia is named the Division of Lingiari. Musicians like Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody wrote songs about him. One famous song is called "From Little Things Big Things Grow." There is even an art award named after him. This award helps artists talk about land and water rights. His life shows how a small group of people can make a huge change.
