He was born in 1909 near a place called Pomeroy. As a young man, he grew up with traditional Zulu music. He later learned about Western hymns at a mission school. In 1931, he moved to the busy gold-mining town of Johannesburg. There, he worked many different jobs to make a living. He eventually joined a singing group called the Evening Birds. This group became very popular for their unique style. They even wore smart pinstriped suits and bowler hats.

Linda changed the way choral music sounded with his new ideas. He used a high, light voice called a falsetto for the main part. This added a special texture to the male singing. He also used many bass singers to create a deep sound. In 1939, while working at a record plant, he improvised a song called "Mbube." This song was a massive success in South Africa. It sold more than 100,000 copies over nine years. Sadly, Linda did not make much money from this success. He sold the rights to his song for only ten shillings. A court later said this deal was not fair.

Many years later, his music traveled far away to the United States. A man named Alan Lomax found his records and shared them. A folk group called the Weavers made a version called "Wimoweh." Later, a group called the Tokens added English lyrics to the tune. They called their version "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," released in 1961.

This new version became a huge hit all over the world. It reached number one on the music charts in the US. The song even became famous again in the 1994 movie *The Lion King*. This film made millions of dollars and helped the song stay famous.

Even though the song was famous, Linda's family stayed very poor. When he died in 1962, he had very little money in his bank account. For a long time, people had forgotten about his great work. His children lived in a small house with an asbestos roof. However, people began to tell his story again around the year 2000. A journalist wrote about him in a magazine called *Rolling Stone*. A documentary called *A Lion's Trail* was also made in 2002. These stories helped the world remember the man who wrote the music.

Today, Solomon Linda is celebrated for his huge impact on music. His family fought in court to get the credit they deserved. They even had a legal case involving the Disney movie *The Lion King*. Eventually, they reached an agreement to receive some of the money. Many famous artists, like Beyoncé, have also honored his musical legacy. In 2022, his hometown of Pomeroy was renamed to Solomon Linda. This change honors the man who brought a beautiful song to the whole world. His music continues to be heard by new generations of listeners.
