He is best known as the creator, showrunner, and executive producer of several major television series. His most famous works include the AMC crime drama Breaking Bad and its prequel, Better Call Saul. These interconnected stories are often referred to by fans and staff as the "Gilliverse." Gilligan's work is highly regarded for its focus on character transformation. He often explores how a person's fundamental nature can change over time through different circumstances.

Creating a television series involves many complex roles and responsibilities. As a showrunner, Gilligan leads the creative direction of a production. He also serves as an executive producer, which involves managing the high-level aspects of the show. His work includes writing original screenplays and directing specific episodes. For example, he directed the final episode of Breaking Bad, titled "Felina." He also directed the first episode of Better Call Saul, titled "Uno." This hands-on approach allows him to maintain a specific vision for his stories.

Gilligan's career is defined by several distinct stages and types of media. He began with writing and producing individual episodes for the science fiction series The X-Files. During this time, he wrote 29 episodes and served as a producer for many others. He also co-created the spin-off series The Lone Gunmen. His work expanded into feature films, such as co-writing the screenplay for Hancock in 2008. He also directed and produced the film El Camino, which serves as a sequel to Breaking Bad.

Currently, he is working on a new science fiction series called Pluribus for Apple TV+.

His journey into filmmaking began with childhood curiosity and early experimentation. Born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1967, Gilligan grew up in Farmville and Chesterfield County. His interest in cinema was sparked when a friend's mother, Jackie Wall, lent him a Super 8 film camera. He used this equipment to create amateur science fiction films with his brother, Patrick. One of these early films was titled Space Wreck. He later won first prize in a film competition at the University of Virginia. This early success led him to attend the NYU Tisch School of the Arts on a scholarship.

At NYU, Gilligan received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in film production. In 1989, he won the Virginia Governor's Screenwriting Award for his screenplay, Home Fries. This achievement caught the attention of producer Mark Johnson, who praised Gilligan's imagination. His professional breakthrough occurred when he submitted a script to the producers of The X-Files. The script was accepted and became the second-season episode "Soft Light." This moment launched his career in major television production.

Gilligan's excellence in storytelling has earned him significant professional recognition.

He has received four Primetime Emmy Awards for his work. His accolades also include six Writers Guild of America Awards and a BAFTA Television Award. He has won two Producers Guild of America Awards and a Directors Guild of America Award. These honors reflect the high level of respect he has earned from his peers in the industry. His ability to write and direct complex drama is a central part of his professional identity.

His creative philosophy often challenges the traditional structure of television. In most long-running shows, characters stay in a state of stasis to allow the series to continue for years. Gilligan wanted to create a show driven by change rather than stability. For Breaking Bad, he aimed to transform a hero into a villain. He described this goal as turning a character from "Mr. Chips into Scarface." This focus on evolution is a key reason why his work is studied and celebrated. His influence continues through his ongoing projects and his unique approach to character arcs.
