In the 1500s, Vilcabamba was the capital for the Neo-Inca State. This was a safe place for the Inca people. They used it to hide from the Spanish. The name Vilcabamba means "sacred plain" in the Quechua language. The city sits near the Chontabamba River. This river flows into the Urubamba River.

For a long time, the location of the city was a secret. In 1911, an explorer named Hiram Bingham found Machu Picchu. He thought it was Vilcabamba. He was wrong. Later, explorers found the real ruins. They call the site Espíritu Pampa.

Gene Savoy found many stone houses there in 1964. He proved that Espíritu Pampa was the true Vilcabamba. This site is very old. Some parts date back to 700 AD. This was long before the Inca lived there. Today, the ruins are hard to reach by car.
