Vigo is a major city and municipality located in Spain.

It sits within the autonomous community of Galicia. Specifically, it is in the province of Pontevedra. Vigo serves as the capital of its own comarca, which is a local administrative region. The city is positioned in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It lies on the southern shore of an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. This inlet is known as the Ria de Vigo.

This water body is the southernmost part of the Rías Baixas. The municipality also includes the Cíes Islands.

These islands are part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park.

The geography of Vigo creates a unique environment for its residents. The city sits on the coastline of the Ria de Vigo estuary. This location likely makes the city warmer throughout the year. However, the weather can be quite extreme in terms of rain. Vigo is the rainiest city in the Galicia region. It has a transitional climate between two specific types. These are the oceanic climate and the warm-summer Mediterranean climate.

Scientists use the Köppen climate classification to describe these patterns. The weather is often compared to the Pacific Northwest in North America. In December 1978, the city experienced massive rainfall. On December 7 of that year, 104 mm of rain fell in one day. The local airport sits further inland at a higher elevation.

History shows that Vigo has changed many times over the centuries. In the Early Middle Ages, it was just a small village. It was part of the territory of nearby Galician-speaking towns. During this time, the village suffered several raids by Vikings. It was not considered a real town until the 15th century.

The city faced many attacks in the 16th and 17th centuries. Francis Drake attacked the city twice. In 1589, he raided the city and burned many buildings.

Later, an Ottoman fleet also tried to attack the city. To protect the people, walls were built in 1656. These walls were constructed during the reign of Philip IV of Spain. Some parts of these historic walls are still preserved today.

The city has a very rich and complex past regarding conflicts. In 1702, the Battle of Vigo Bay took place.

In 1719, a British force occupied the city for ten days. This happened because a Spanish fleet tried to invade Scotland. Later, the French Army annexed Spain in 1808.

However, Vigo was the first city in Europe to be freed from French rule. This event is celebrated every year on March 28. This celebration is called the Reconquista. In 1833, the city of Pontevedra became the provincial capital. Vigo grew very quickly during the 20th century. In 1947, the Spanish government granted it a free trade zone. This helped encourage international trade in southern Galicia.

Today, Vigo is a very large and diverse urban center. As of 2024, the municipality has a population of 295,523 people.

Many people in Vigo were born in other countries. About 14.2% of the population is foreign-born. The largest groups come from Venezuela, Colombia, and Argentina. Languages are also very important in the city. Many people speak Spanish, but others speak Galician. In 2013, about 51.39% of people spoke Spanish. About 7.7% spoke only Galician. This makes Vigo the least Galician-speaking city in the region.

There are many cultural and natural sites for people to visit. The city is known as the "cidade olívica," or city of olives.
