The name Vientiane has deep linguistic roots. It is a French spelling of the Lao name Viangchan. In the Lao language, "viang" refers to a walled city. The term "chan" is derived from the Sanskrit word "candana," which means sandalwood. Therefore, the name can be translated as the walled city of sandalwood. Some people believe the name refers to the moon. This is because "chan" can also represent the moon in certain contexts.

Archaeological evidence shows a very old history for this region. A Mon inscription from the 9th century was discovered in 1968 at Ban Tha Lat. This finding suggests a Mon presence in the area. By the 6th century, Mon peoples had formed the Dvaravati kingdoms in the Chao Phraya River Valley. In the 8th century, they created several city states. One of these was Chantaburi, which is associated with Vientiane. These city states were culturally similar and introduced Theravada Buddhism to the region via missionaries from Sri Lanka.

Political changes shaped the city over many centuries. In 1135, a place called Văn Đan, which is Vientiane, was a vassal of the Khmer Empire. Later, the kingdom of Lan Xang was founded in 1354. King Setthathirath officially established Vientiane as the capital of Lan Xang in 1563. He made this decision to protect the kingdom from a Burmese invasion. During French rule, the city served as the administrative capital. In 1943, the population was 53% Vietnamese due to migration encouraged by the French. The city was also occupied by Japanese forces during World War II.

Today, Vientiane is a major destination for religious tourism. The city is famous for its many Buddhist temples and monuments. Pha That Luang is a national cultural monument and a famous stupa. This golden stupa was built in 1566 and restored in 1953. It is believed to contain a relic of the Buddha. Another site is Haw Phra Kaew, which used to house the Emerald Buddha. Visitors also enjoy Buddha Park, located south of the city near the Mekong River. This park contains many Hindu and Buddhist sculptures among trees and gardens.

The city has a modern transportation network to support its growth. Travelers can arrive via Wattay International Airport. This airport provides connections to Asian cities like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. The city is also connected to a large railway system. A metre gauge railway was inaugurated in 2009. Additionally, the Boten–Vientiane railway is an electrified line. It runs between the capital and the Chinese border. This line officially opened on December 3, 2021.

Local movement within the city is managed through several systems. The Vientiane Capital State Bus Enterprise provides regular bus services. In 2024, the city began constructing a bus rapid transit (BRT) service. This project includes three lines totaling 13.9 kilometers in length. The service uses 55 buses manufactured by Chery Wanda in China. Taxis are also common on the streets. Many older taxis are now being replaced by newer Chinese-made cars.

Economic and social systems continue to develop in the capital. Vientiane has seen economic growth driven by foreign investment. In 2011, the local stock exchange opened with two listed companies. The city is also a center for education and healthcare. The National University of Laos is located here. For medical needs, the Mahosot Hospital conducts important research on diseases. A volunteer-run service called Vientiane Rescue provides 24/7 ambulance services. These various systems help the city function as a modern capital.
