Vidkun Quisling was a Norwegian military officer and politician who became a major collaborator with Nazi Germany.

He is most famous for leading a puppet government during the German occupation of Norway in World War II. Because of his actions, his name became a common English word for a traitor or a collaborator. This term describes someone who assists an enemy against their own country. His life moved from humanitarian success to political failure and eventually to historical infamy.

Quisling was born on 18 July 1887 in Fyresdal, Norway.

His father was a pastor and a genealogist. As a student, Quisling excelled in the humanities and natural sciences. He showed a particular talent for mathematics. In 1905, he entered the Norwegian Military Academy. He received the highest entrance score among 250 applicants. Later, he graduated from the Norwegian Military College with the highest score since 1817. This achievement earned him an audience with King Haakon VII.

In the early 1920s, Quisling gained international recognition for his humanitarian work.

He worked closely with the famous explorer Fridtjof Nansen. During the Russian famine of 1921 in the Povolzhye region, Quisling helped organize relief efforts. He produced a report that helped attract necessary aid to the area. Nansen described Quisling's administrative work during this time as "absolutely indispensable." These years established him as a capable diplomat and organizer on the world stage.

Quisling's political views shifted significantly during the 1920s and 1930s. He served as the minister of defence in two different Norwegian governments between 1931 and 1933. In 1933, he founded a fascist political party called Nasjonal Samling.

While he gained some followers by attacking the political left, his party was not very successful. It failed to win any seats in the Storting, which is the Norwegian parliament. By 1940, his political influence remained quite small.

When Germany invaded Norway on 9 April 1940, Quisling attempted to seize power.

He tried to conduct the world's first radio-broadcast coup d'état. This attempt failed because the Germans chose a different strategy. Instead of recognizing Quisling, the Germans tried to convince the existing Norwegian government to legitimize the occupation. This was similar to what happened in Denmark during the same invasion. Quisling's initial attempt to take control through the radio did not work.

On 1 February 1942, Quisling formed a second government with German approval. He served as the minister president and headed the state administration. He worked alongside the German civilian administrator, Josef Terboven.

This regime was dominated by members of his Nasjonal Samling party. The Quisling government participated in Germany's war efforts. Most notably, the administration participated in the deportation of Jewish people to concentration camps in occupied Poland. In those camps, most of the deported people were killed.

After World War II ended, Norway held a legal purge to hold people accountable. Quisling was put on trial for several serious crimes. He was found guilty of high treason against the Norwegian state, as well as murder and embezzlement. The court sentenced him to death. This sentence was controversial because capital punishment had been abolished in Norway in 1905. Additionally, no death sentence had been carried out since 1876. Despite these legal questions, the sentence was upheld.

Quisling was executed by a firing squad at Akershus Fortress in Oslo on 24 October 1945.

His life serves as a primary example of how political collaboration can lead to total loss of national standing. Today, his actions are studied as a major instance of betrayal during wartime. His legacy remains tied to the concept of the "quisling," a person who betrays their own people to serve an occupying force.
