In Europe, a similar version called Type B became very common in the 1980s. Sony also introduced the U-matic system in 1971 to help with professional video.

Videotape changed how we watch and save history. For example, the first time instant replay was used was during an Army-Navy Game in 1963. Many classic shows were recorded on these tapes. Some of these include the 1960 telecast of Peter Pan. You might also find old clips of the Nutcracker ballet from 1977. In the early 2000s, new tools like hard disks and flash memory became popular. Quad used a transverse four-head system to scan the tape across its width. This system became the industry standard for approximately thirty years because it produced excellent images. However, Quad had limitations, such as the inability to freeze a picture or search through video. In 1976, the Type C format was introduced. Type C allowed for new features like slow-motion playback, shuttling, and still framing.

Different regions adopted different professional standards during the late 20th century. While Type C was used in many places, Europe utilized a similar format called Type B. Type B machines used the same 1-inch tape as Type C but lacked the shuttle and slow-motion options. Type B offered slightly better picture quality and was the broadcast norm in continental Europe during the 1980s.

Sony also influenced the market by introducing the U-matic system in 1971, which helped establish professional video standards.

The transition to digital recording changed the landscape of media again. In 1986, Sony introduced the D-1, which featured uncompressed digital component recording. Because D-1 was very expensive, later formats like the composite D-2 and D-3 were developed to be more affordable. The DV standard arrived in 1995 and was used in both MiniDV cassettes and professional variants.

As technology advanced, high-definition video required even more storage capacity. This led to the creation of standards like Sony's HDCAM and Panasonic's DVCPRO HD to handle high-definition streams.

Videotape has captured many important moments in history. In 1963, Tony Verna used a videotape-based system to provide the first instant replay during a live Army–Navy Game. Many classic television programs were recorded on these tapes. Examples include the 1960 telecast of Peter Pan and the 1977 production of The Nutcracker ballet. In the early 2000s, high-quality random-access media like hard disks and flash memory rose to prominence.
