In 1956, a company called Ampex made the first successful video tape recorder. This machine cost $50,000, which is a huge amount of money. Because of this high cost, regular families could not use them.

To make a movie work, the machine uses a special kind of tape. This tape is 12.7 mm wide and is coated with metal oxide. The tape sits on two spools inside a plastic cassette. When you put the tape in a machine, it moves past a recording head. The machine also uses a light to know when to stop. A small light shines through the center of the cassette.

If the light hits a sensor, the machine knows the tape has reached the end. This prevents the machine from trying to play a tape that is not there.

Even when JVC had less money in 1972, the engineers kept working in secret. By 1973, they had built a working model of the system. JVC released the first VHS machines in Japan in late 1976.

A different system called Betamax was made by Sony. Betamax tapes were smaller, but they could only record for one hour. VHS tapes could record for two hours or more. This was a big advantage for families watching movies. Because VHS was an open standard, many other companies could make machines for it. Companies like Matsushita helped VHS become the most popular choice. By 1980, VHS held 60% of the market in North America.

Eventually, new technology changed how we watch things. In the late 1990s, digital discs called DVDs became popular.

These discs were better for movies than old tapes. In the 2000s, digital video recorders or DVRs also became common. Most people stopped using VHS tapes for home recording. Before the rise of VHS, video recording was largely a professional tool. The system's success relied on a combination of technical capacity and a widespread manufacturing network.

At the heart of the system is a 12.7 mm wide magnetic tape. This tape is made of Mylar and is coated with metal oxide particles.

The tape is wound between two spools inside a plastic shell. This shell is 187 mm wide, 103 mm deep, and 25 mm thick. To ensure high quality, the tapes are manufactured in cleanrooms. This prevents dust from becoming embedded in the tape, which could cause signal dropouts during playback. The cassette also includes an anti-despooling mechanism to keep the tape organized between the spools.

Operating a VHS player involves a precise mechanical process. When a cassette is inserted, the VCR uses a light source to monitor the tape's position.

Early machines used an incandescent bulb, while later models used an infrared LED for a longer life. This light shines through a hole in the center of the cassette. Two photodiodes on either side detect when the clear tape leader reaches them. Once the light passes through the clear leader to the photodiode, the machine triggers an optical auto-stop. This prevents the mechanism from attempting to play a tape that has already reached its end.

The development of VHS was driven by a desire to make video recording affordable for homes. In 1971, JVC engineers Yuma Shiraishi and Shizuo Takano formed a team to create a consumer-grade system. They established a "VHS Development Matrix" with twelve specific objectives. These goals included compatibility with ordinary televisions and a recording capacity of at least two hours. They also wanted the system to be versatile, allowing for connections to video cameras. Even when JVC faced budget cuts in 1972, the engineers continued their work in secret. They successfully produced a functional prototype by 1973.

VHS is perhaps most famous for winning the "format war" against Sony's Betamax.

While Betamax offered smaller cassettes and potentially higher video quality, it had a major limitation. Early Betamax machines could only record one hour of programming. In contrast, the first VHS machines could record for two hours. This was possible because VHS used a longer tape and a slightly slower tape speed of 1.31 inches per second. Although Sony later developed faster tape speeds to increase recording time, VHS had already gained a massive lead. By 1980, VHS held 60% of the North American market.

Strategic partnerships played a massive role in this victory. JVC chose to use an open standard, meaning they shared the technology with other companies. This was different from Sony's approach with Betamax. JVC convinced major manufacturers like Matsushita to support the VHS format. Matsushita, which marketed products as National or Panasonic, feared a Sony monopoly.

Matsushita also viewed the one-hour limit of Betamax as a significant disadvantage. This collaboration provided the scale necessary to dominate the global market.

The era of magnetic tape eventually gave way to digital technology. In the late 1990s, the optical disc format known as DVD began to emerge.

DVDs provided a different way to distribute movies and eventually surpassed VHS rentals in the United States by 2003. For home recording, digital video recorders (DVRs) replaced VCRs during the 2000s. While the production of all VHS equipment officially ceased by 2016, the format remains a point of interest for collectors. It stands as a significant milestone in the history of consumer electronics and home entertainment.
