It lives in the warm waters of South America. This plant has the second largest leaves in its family. These leaves can grow very wide. They float on the water on long stalks. These stalks can be as long as a green anaconda snake.

The leaves have air spaces inside. This makes them very light. They can also hold a lot of weight if the weight is spread out. The bottom of the leaf has many small spines. These spines protect the plant from fish. They also help the plant push other plants away to get sunlight.

The flowers are also very large. They start to open when the sun sets.

The flowers give off a fruity smell. This smell attracts beetles. The flower traps the beetles inside for a day. While they are inside, the beetles eat food from the plant. The petals change from white to pink. This change happens because of tiny parts called anthocyanins. When the flower opens again, the beetles fly away covered in pollen. They then visit other lilies to help them grow.
