Slipher did important work with light. He used a tool called spectroscopy. This tool helps scientists study light. He used it to look at spiral nebulae. These are big groups of stars called galaxies.

In 1912, Slipher found something big. He saw that galaxies have a redshift. A redshift means their light looks a bit redder. This happens because they are moving away from us. Slipher measured 25 of these galaxies. He found that almost all of them were moving away. This was the first proof that the universe is expanding. This means the universe is getting bigger.

Slipher also studied our planets. He found that Uranus spins very fast. He even helped find Pluto in 1930. He was the director of his observatory for many years. Many things in space are named after him. There is a crater on the Moon named Slipher. There is also a crater on Mars with his name.
