Vera Rubin was a famous astronomer.

She spent her life studying the stars. As a child, she watched the sky from her window. She even built a small telescope out of cardboard.

Rubin studied how galaxies spin. A galaxy is a huge group of stars. She looked at the Andromeda Galaxy to find clues. She noticed something very strange about how galaxies move. The stars at the very edge spin as fast as the stars near the center.

This was a big surprise. Based on the light we see, those stars should fly away. They should spin right out of the galaxy!

Because the stars stay in place, Rubin knew something was missing. There must be extra mass holding them together. This unseen stuff is called dark matter. Her work gave us the first big proof that dark matter exists.

Rubin also helped many women in science. She wanted girls to follow their dreams in space. Today, a big observatory in Chile is named for her.
