Venice and Genoa were two powerful sea cities in Italy. They both built big trade empires. They wanted to control the sea routes. This led to four big wars between 1256 and 1381. Most of these fights happened on the water using ships.

The first fight was the War of Saint Sabas. It started because of a dispute between merchants. Venice won this war. However, Genoa still grew strong in the Black Sea. This area was a busy place for trade.

Later, the two cities fought again. They had a war called the War of the Straits. This fight ended in a tie. Then came the War of Chioggia. During this war, Genoa reached the edge of Venice. Venice worked very hard to save its city. Venice won this final big fight.
