He is most famous for his leadership during the Battle of Stalingrad in the Second World War. During this conflict, he commanded the 62nd Army to defend the city. Later in the war, he was the general who accepted the surrender of German troops in Berlin. His life moved from a humble beginning to the highest levels of military power.

Chuikov was born into a peasant family in the village of Serebryanye Prudy. This village is in the Tula region, south of Moscow. He was the eighth child in a very large family of twelve. At only 12 years old, he left school to work in a Saint Petersburg factory. There, he manufactured metal spurs for cavalry officers. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, he joined the Red Guards. He soon joined the Red Army in 1918 and fought in the Russian Civil War.

After the Civil War, Chuikov focused on his professional military education. He graduated from the Frunze Military Academy in 1925. Because of his excellent academic performance, he stayed to study Chinese language and history. He traveled through many Chinese cities, including Beijing, Tianjin, and Port Arthur. In 1927, he served as a military attaché in China. This role helped him become fluent in the Chinese language. He gained a deep understanding of Chinese politics and culture during this time.

Chuikov's career included several important commands before the Second World War. He commanded the 4th Army during the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939. He also led the 9th Army during the Winter War against Finland in 1940. In December 1940, he returned to China as a military representative. He served as an adviser to the Nationalist leader, Chiang Kai-shek. He brought Soviet armaments, such as tanks, artillery, and aircraft, to support the Nationalists. His goal was to keep China engaged in the war against Japan. This helped the Soviet Union focus on threats from the West.

In September 1942, Chuikov was assigned to command the 62nd Army in Stalingrad. His mission was to defend the city at all costs. The German 6th Army was advancing toward the city with fast-moving motorized infantry. To counter the German combined-arms tactics, Chuikov developed a strategy called "hugging the enemy." He ordered Soviet soldiers to keep their front-line positions as close to the Germans as possible. This proximity made it difficult for the German airforce to attack without hitting their own troops.

Life in the 62nd Army was extremely difficult and dangerous. Chuikov established his command post on Hill 102.24 to stay near the fighting. He was very concerned about maintaining communications with his troops. He believed that losing control of his units was the greatest danger a commander could face. In late November 1942, the Soviet forces launched a massive counter-offensive. This movement eventually led to the surrender of the German 6th Army in early 1943.

Following the victory at Stalingrad, Chuikov led his forces through several major operations. He participated in Operation Bagration and the Vistula–Oder Offensive. His troops advanced through Poland and eventually reached Berlin. On May 2, 1945, he personally accepted the unconditional surrender of the German forces. This was a defining moment in the history of the Second World War.

After the war, Chuikov held many high-ranking positions within the Soviet military. He served as the Chief of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany from 1949 to 1953. He was also the commander of the Kiev Military District and the head of the Soviet Civil Defense Forces. In 1955, he was named a Marshal of the Soviet Union. He received many honors, including the Distinguished Service Cross from the United States.

Chuikov lived a long life that was shaped by his early military wounds. During the Civil War, he was wounded four times. One wound in Poland in 1920 left a metal fragment in his arm. This injury caused partial paralysis and remained with him for the rest of his life. In 1981, this old wound led to a serious illness called septicaemia. He died on March 18, 1982. He was buried at the Stalingrad memorial at Mamayev Kurgan. This site was a place of heavy fighting during the war he helped win.
