Vasilevsky was born on September 30, 1895, in Novaya Golchikha, Russia. He was the fourth of eight children in a very poor family. His father, Mikhail, was a priest at a local church. His mother, Nadezhda, was also the daughter of a priest. The family struggled financially during his childhood. The children often worked in the fields to help their parents. Vasilevsky attended a church school and later entered the Kostroma seminary in 1909. This religious education was interrupted by a nationwide seminarist movement caused by a ministerial directive. He eventually left his studies to pursue other interests.

Originally, Vasilevsky intended to become an agronomist or a surveyor. He wanted to study land and plants after the war. However, the outbreak of World War I changed his life path. He felt a strong sense of patriotism and joined the military. He entered the Alexander Military Law Academy in February 1915. He was sent to the front as a praporshchik, a high non-commissioned rank. By 1916, he was a battalion commander. He earned the rank of captain by the age of 22.

During the interwar period, he focused on military organization. He graduated from the Vystrel regimental commander's course in 1928. He later joined the Directorate of Military Training in 1931. In this role, he supervised training and wrote military manuals. He also built connections with important leaders like Boris Shaposhnikov. Shaposhnikov became a vital mentor to Vasilevsky.

During the Great Purge of 1937, many senior commanders were removed. This created many vacancies in the Soviet military leadership. Vasilevsky was appointed to the General Staff in October 1937. He became responsible for the operational training of senior officers. By 1939, he was the deputy chief of operations. He helped plan the Winter War and set boundaries with Finland. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, his responsibilities grew rapidly. He was promoted to chief of operations and deputy chief of the general staff.
