As a young boy, he saw art on temple walls. This made him want to paint. He even served as a monk for a few years. Later, he went to a school for painting. He worked at the school to pay for his lessons.

During a hard time in his country, Vann Nath was sent to a prison. This place was called S-21. It was a very sad and scary place. Vann Nath was one of only seven adult prisoners to survive. The leaders of the prison kept him alive for one reason. They made him paint portraits of their leader, Pol Pot.

After the war, Vann Nath used his art to tell the truth. He made paintings of what happened in the prison. He also wrote a book about his life there. His work helped people learn about the past. He also helped bring art back to Cambodia. He won the Lillian Hellman/Hammett Award for his courage. He worked hard to help people find justice for those who suffered.
