Vanilla has a sweet smell.

This smell comes from a special part of the vanilla bean. It is called vanillin. You can find it in many treats.

Green pods do not smell like vanilla yet. They must be cured to get the scent. This takes many months.

First, the pods are put in hot water. Then, they sit in the sun. At night, they are wrapped in cloth.

This helps the pods turn dark brown. The pods then release the sweet smell. Now they are ready to use!
