Adams' career was defined by incredible strength and precision. To succeed, she had to master the complex mechanics of the throw. She achieved a personal best outdoor throw of 21.24 meters in 2011. This mark was set in Daegu, South Korea. This distance is an Oceanian, Commonwealth, and New Zealand national record. Her indoor personal best reached 20.98 meters in Zürich. These numbers show her ability to perform at the highest level in different environments.

Her success came in many different stages and formats. She won four consecutive individual titles at the IAAF World Championships. This made her the first woman to achieve such a feat. Throughout her career, Adams showed great resilience against physical challenges. She competed in the 2004 Olympics while recovering from an appendectomy. Later in her career, she faced several surgeries. She had operations on her ankle, knee, shoulder, and elbow. Even with these injuries, she maintained a massive winning streak. From August 2010 to July 2015, she won 56 consecutive elite-level competitions.

After retiring from competition in 2022, Adams moved into sports leadership. She was appointed to the board of High Performance Sport New Zealand. She also serves on the World Athletics Athletes' Commission. In 2023, she was elected as the chairperson of that commission. She also leads the Oceania Athletics Athletes' Commission.
