He later changed his name after being adopted by his stepfather in 1957. He earned a doctoral degree from the I. M. Sechenov 1st Moscow Medical Institute. In 1964, he specialized in astronautics medicine at the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems. This specialization was inspired by the flight of Boris Yegorov, the first physician in space. Polyakov was then selected as a cosmonaut in 1972.
