Vaccines and autism

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scientists have studied vaccines and autism for a long time. They found no link between them. Major health groups say vaccines are safe. They also say shots do not overwhelm the immune system. This is the part of your body that fights germs.

Long ago, a man named Andrew Wakefield wrote a paper. He claimed the MMR vaccine caused autism. But his work was a fraud. He changed the facts to get his result. This paper was later taken back. It was called a big hoax.

Some people worry about what is in vaccines. They mention things like thiomersal. This is a preservative that stops germs from growing in a vial. Other people worry about aluminium. This is used to help the body respond to the vaccine. They also worry about formaldehyde. This is a substance used to make germs inactive. However, the body even makes its own formaldehyde naturally.

Some think too many shots at once are bad. This is called vaccine overload. But the immune system can fight thousands of germs at once. Vaccines are only a tiny part of what a child meets each year.
