Uthman ibn Affan was a very important leader in early Islamic history. He served as the third caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate. A caliph is a leader of the Muslim community. Uthman was also a very successful merchant and trader. He became one of the wealthiest people in the Quraysh. Because he was so generous with his money, he earned the title "Ghani." This title means he was exceedingly generous to those in need.

Uthman's life changed when he learned of Muhammad's mission in 611. He became one of the earliest converts to Islam. He even moved to Abyssinia with his wife, Ruqayya, in 615. Later, he moved to Medina in 622. He was very close to the prophet Muhammad. In fact, he married two of Muhammad's daughters. This earned him the special title "The Possessor of Two Lights."

After the previous leader, Umar, died, a committee was formed. This group of six people had to choose a new caliph. The members included Ali ibn Abi Talib and Uthman himself. Uthman was elected to lead the community. At the time, he was between 68 and 71 years old. This made him the oldest person to hold such a high position. His rule helped the empire grow much larger.

During his reign, the empire reached very far. It expanded into Persia and parts of the East. It also reached into Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. Uthman made changes to help the economy grow. He allowed more trade by removing old restrictions on land. He also used Sassanid-style coins with Arabic writing on them.

One of Uthman's most famous jobs was helping the Quran. He noticed that people were reciting it in different ways. To keep the text the same, he ordered a committee to work. This group was led by Zayd ibn Thabit. They created a standardized version of the holy book. This version is still used by Muslims today. Sadly, the last years of his rule were difficult. Discontent led to a revolt and his assassination in 656.
