Urinal

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A urinal is a specialized sanitary plumbing fixture. It is designed specifically for urination rather than general waste.

While they resemble toilets, urinals are optimized for efficiency and space. They are most commonly used in a standing position. In many Western countries, they are a standard feature in male public restrooms. However, they are less common in Muslim countries. Beyond plumbing, the term can also describe a small building containing these fixtures. It can even refer to a small medical container used to collect urine for analysis.

Using a urinal offers several functional advantages in busy environments. In high-traffic public toilets, they increase efficiency by allowing faster usage. They are often considered more sanitary than general-purpose toilets. This is because there are no toilet seats to touch and no door locks to handle. Additionally, there are no fecal germs present at the urinal. Using urinals also helps keep standard toilet stalls cleaner. This leaves those stalls available for people who need to defecate.

Urinals are designed with various mechanical flushing systems. Manual flush urinals use a lever or handle.

Users pull the handle down to rinse the bowl. In some high-traffic areas, foot-activated systems are used instead. These feature a pedal or button set at ankle height. In Europe and South America, timed flush systems are more traditional. These connect a group of urinals to a single overhead cistern.

A constant drip-feed fills the cistern until it reaches a tipping point. Then, a valve opens or a siphon starts to drain the water. This flushes all the connected urinals at once. Some systems use infrared sensors to stop the cistern from filling if no one is using the room.

Modern installations often utilize automatic flush valves. These valves use an infrared sensor to detect movement.

The sensor identifies when someone stands in front of the fixture and then moves away. To prevent false triggers, most detectors require a presence for at least ten seconds. The mechanism usually waits for the person to leave the sensor's range before flushing. This prevents a line of urinals from flushing if someone simply walks past. In some Asian countries, door-regulated flushes are used. These trigger a flush every time the restroom door is opened.

Waterless urinals represent a significant technological shift toward conservation. They were first developed at the end of the 19th century by Wilhelm Beetz.

He used an oil-based syphon called Urinol. Modern waterless models use a trap insert filled with a sealant liquid. This liquid is lighter than water, so it floats on top of the urine. This creates a seal that prevents odors from escaping into the air. These units can save a massive amount of water per year. For example, they are highly effective if used between 40 and 120 times per business day. They also allow for the collection of undiluted urine to be used as fertilizer.

Urinals come in many physical configurations to accommodate different users. Some are arranged as single fixtures with privacy walls.

Others use a trough design, which is a long shared fixture. Troughs are often used in stadiums, music festivals, or dance clubs to handle high demand. To assist people with disabilities, some urinals are mounted lower. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires specific mounting heights for flush valves and urinals. Some designs even extend all the way to the floor.

This allows users of any height, including children, to use them easily.

Plumbing maintenance is a key part of urinal design. Most public urinals include a plastic mesh guard. This guard is intended to stop solid objects from entering the system. Items like cigarette butts, paper, or chewing gum could cause a plumbing stoppage. Some establishments even place ice in the urinals to help with odor control. This serves a similar purpose to a deodorizing urinal cake. These small tools ensure that the plumbing remains functional and the environment remains pleasant for all users.
