Urea

Urea is a colorless and odorless solid that dissolves very easily in water. It is an organic compound that plays a vital role in the lives of many animals. In mammals, urea is the main way the body handles nitrogen. It is the most common nitrogen-containing substance found in urine. Because it is not toxic to animals, the body can safely move it through the system.

Your body uses a special way of working to create urea. This process happens inside the liver through something called the urea cycle. To make urea, the liver combines two molecules of ammonia with one molecule of carbon dioxide. This helps the body get rid of nitrogen that it does not need. Once it is made, the urea travels through the body to be removed.

A very important moment in science happened in 1828. A scientist named Friedrich Wöhler discovered how to make urea in a laboratory. Before this, people believed in an idea called vitalism. Vitalism was the belief that organic things could only come from living organisms. Wöhler showed that he could make urea from non-biological materials. This discovery changed how scientists thought about chemistry and life.

Today, urea is used in many different ways around the world. More than 90% of the urea made in factories is used as fertilizer. It is a great source of nitrogen for plants to help them grow. Urea is also used in many skin creams to help keep skin moist. Some trucks use a liquid called diesel exhaust fluid to clean their exhaust. This fluid contains 32.5% urea and 67.5% water to help turn bad gases into safe nitrogen and water.

You might see urea in things you use every day. It is an ingredient in some hair removers and tooth whitening products. It is even used as a browning agent to make pretzels look tasty. Doctors can also use urea in special tests to find bacteria in the stomach. This is done with a urea breath test to check for a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. It is amazing how one simple solid can be used in so many different places.
