Later, the school needed more space. Leaders decided to move to a new site in Diliman. They began building there in 1939. But World War II stopped the work. During the war, some buildings were used by the Japanese army. After the war, the school grew very fast.

The University of the Philippines, often called UP, is the national university of the Philippines. Under Republic Act No. 9500, also known as the UP Charter of 2008, it serves as a state public university system. The institution has a specific mandate to help the country develop. It does this through three main pillars: instruction, research, and public service.

This role is vital because it provides advanced training to students across many different fields.

The university operates through a complex organizational structure known as the UP System. This system is not just one single campus, but a network of different units. It includes eight constituent universities and one autonomous college. These units are spread across 17 different campuses throughout the country. The system-wide administration is headquartered at the UP Diliman campus in Quezon City.

This structure allows different regions to have their own specialized academic focuses.

The constituent universities include UP Diliman, UP Los Baños, UP Manila, UP Visayas, UP Mindanao, UP Baguio, UP Cebu, and UP Tacloban. There is also the UP Open University, which focuses on distance and open learning. Some units started with very specific roles. For example, UP Los Baños focused on agriculture and forestry. The Health Sciences Center, which later became UP Manila, focused on medical studies.

UP Visayas was established later with a focus on fisheries and marine sciences. Today, most of these units have become multidisciplinary, meaning they teach many different subjects.

The history of UP began in the early 1900s. Before its creation, many Filipinos had to travel to Spain or Europe for higher education. To fix this, the American colonial government established UP on June 18, 1908. This was done through Act No. 1870, known as the University Act. The first president was Judge Newton W. Gilbert. The university was designed to be the premier institution for higher learning. It promised to provide training without discrimination based on age, sex, nationality, religion, or politics.

The first academic units, like the College of Agriculture, appeared in 1909.

In the early years, the university was spread out across Manila. The College of Agriculture was located in Los Baños at the foot of Mount Makiling. Other units, such as the College of Law and the College of Engineering, were located in different parts of Manila. As the university grew, it needed more space. In 1937, President Manuel L. Quezon suggested moving the units to a new site. This led to the acquisition of a 493-hectare lot in Diliman, Quezon City.

Construction began in 1939, but World War II interrupted the work. During the war, the Japanese Imperial Army occupied several buildings on the Diliman campus.

After the war, a massive rehabilitation effort took place. In 1949, the university officially transferred its main operations to the Diliman campus. This move included the relocation of the Oblation, a famous statue, which was the last movable property from the Manila campus. The 1970s brought significant changes to how the university was organized. In 1972, the institution transitioned into a multi-campus system of autonomous constituent universities. UP Los Baños became the first autonomous unit on November 20, 1972. This allowed the campus to manage its own administrative and financial affairs.

In the decades following the reorganization, the UP System continued to expand its reach. UP Manila was formally named in 1982, following the autonomy granted to the Health Sciences Center in 1977.

UP Mindanao was created to meet the development needs of the Mindanao region. UP Baguio grew from extension programs that started at UP Diliman. Similarly, UP Cebu and UP Tacloban began as campuses of UP Visayas before becoming their own constituent universities.

This growth shows how the university has moved from a single center to a nationwide network.

The university remains deeply connected to the scientific and social progress of the Philippines. In 1983, a system of National Centers of Excellence in the Basic Sciences was established. This mandate allows the Board of Regents to organize specific academic units to boost the country's scientific manpower. Through its various campuses, such as UP Mindanao in Davao City, the university continues its mission.
