The University of Osaka, often called UOsaka, is a major national research university in Osaka, Japan. It is recognized as one of the most productive research institutions in the country. The university is known for its high academic standards and its focus on discovery. As of April 2025, its official English name is The University of Osaka.
The university's academic spirit comes from several different historical sources. Its humanities programs are rooted in the Kaitokudō, a school for local citizens founded in 1724. The natural and applied sciences draw from the traditions of the Tekijuku. This school was a school of Rangaku, or Dutch studies, for samurai. It was founded by Ogata Kōan in 1838. These diverse roots helped create a university that values both culture and science.
Modern history began with the Osaka Prefectural Medical School in 1869. This school became a medical college with university status in 1919. In 1931, the medical college merged with a new College of Science. This merger created Osaka Imperial University, the sixth imperial university in Japan. Two years later, the School of Engineering was formed by incorporating the Osaka Technical College. In 1947, the entire institution was renamed Osaka University.
The university has grown significantly through various mergers and reforms. Following post-war reforms in 1949, it merged with Naniwa High School and Osaka High School. This reorganization created five main faculties: Science, Medicine, Engineering, Letters, and Law. In 2007, UOsaka merged with the Osaka University of Foreign Studies. This merger made UOsaka the largest national university in Japan by undergraduate enrollment. It also made UOsaka one of only two national universities with a School of Foreign Studies.
Today, the university operates across several distinct campuses. The Toyonaka campus is the home for Humanities, Law, Economics, Science, and Engineering Science. All undergraduate students attend classes here during their first year. The Suita campus houses Human Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Engineering. It also contains the University of Osaka Hospital and the Research Center for Nuclear Physics. The Minoh campus, added in 2007, focuses on foreign studies and Japanese language research.
The university is a massive organization with many moving parts. It consists of 11 undergraduate schools and 15 graduate schools. These schools cover diverse subjects like Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Information Science and Technology. UOsaka also manages 21 research institutes, 4 libraries, and 2 university hospitals. To connect with the world, the university maintains four overseas Centers for Education and Research. These are located in San Francisco, Groningen, Bangkok, and Shanghai.
UOsaka is highly ranked for its global impact and innovation. In the 2024 QS World University Rankings, it placed 80th globally and 3rd in Japan.
