It sits within the Ujjain district of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Geographically, the city rests on the Malwa plateau. This area is higher than the north Indian plains. To the south, the land rises toward the Vindhya mountain ranges. The city is positioned on the eastern bank of the Shipra River. This river eventually flows into the larger Chambal River.

The local climate follows a humid subtropical pattern, known as Köppen Cwa. This means the city experiences distinct seasonal shifts. Summers begin in mid-March and last until late June. During this time, temperatures can reach a high of 45 °C. The hottest period usually peaks in May with averages of 41 °C. Following summer, the monsoon season arrives from late June to late September. This period brings about 914 mm of precipitation and frequent thunderstorms. These heavy rains can sometimes lead to flooding in the region. After the monsoon, a dry and humid phase occurs before winter begins in early November. Winters are generally cool, dry, and sunny. During occasional cold snaps, temperatures may drop near freezing, between 0 °C and 3 °C.

Ujjain is a deeply significant religious center for many Hindus. It is recognized as one of the Sapta Puri pilgrimage sites. It is especially famous for the Kumbh Mela, or Simhastha, held every 12 years.

The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple sits at the very center of the city. Puranic legends connect the city to the Samudra Manthana, or the churning of the ocean of milk. During this event, the celestial bird Garuda carried a pitcher called a kumbha. Drops of amrita, an elixir of immortality, reportedly spilled at four sites. Ujjain is one of those four locations, alongside Haridwar, Nashik, and Prayag. Because of the holy Shipra River, the city is also called the 'Mokshadayini city.' People believe bathing in the river liberates them from sins.

The history of the city spans many ancient civilizations. Long ago, the city was known as Avantika. It served as the capital of the ancient Avanti kingdom. Around 600 BCE, it emerged as a major political and commercial hub on the Malwa plateau.

The ancient walled city was located near the Garh Kalika hill. It covered an irregular pentagonal area of 0.875 km2. To protect the citizens, the city featured a 12 m high mud rampart. Archaeologists also found evidence of a moat that was 45 m wide and 6.6 m deep. These defenses were likely constructed between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE. Excavations at nearby Kayatha show agricultural settlements dating back to 2000 BCE.

Many powerful empires have controlled Ujjain over the centuries. In the 4th century BCE, the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta annexed Avanti. His grandson, Ashoka, served as the viceroy of Ujjain. This role highlighted the immense importance of the town. The city later saw rule by the Shungas, the Satavahanas, and the Guptas. During the 5th century, the great poet Kalidasa lived during the Gupta era. He wrote about the richness of Ujjain in his work, Meghadūta. In the 18th century, the city briefly became the capital of the Scindia state. Ranoji Scindia established this capital in 1731. However, the British later chose to develop Indore as an alternative center. This decision was made because Ujjain's merchants had supported anti-British groups.

Ujjain remains a vital urban and cultural center today. It is the fifth-largest city in Madhya Pradesh by population. According to the 2011 census, the population was 515,215 people. The city has a literacy rate of 85.55%. Hindi is the most commonly spoken language, though Malvi is also widely used.

The city is currently part of the Smart Cities Mission. This is a flagship program led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This mission aims to develop one hundred Indian cities using modern technology. The Ujjain Municipal Corporation manages most of the surrounding regions. It was established in 1956 under the Madhya Pradesh Nagar Palika Nigam Adhiniyam.

Scientific and architectural landmarks also define the city's character. One notable site is the Jantar Mantar.

This observatory was commissioned by Jai Singh II of Jaipur. The city has also been a center for intellectual learning. It hosted various traditions, including Jain, Buddhist, and Hindu studies. Its location on trade routes connecting north India to the Deccan helped its growth. This strategic position made it a prominent commercial center for much of its history. From ancient Mahājanapadas to the modern era, Ujjain has stayed central to India's story.
