It provided easy access to various navigable waterways for transport. This position allowed it to evolve from a small settlement into a large city.
Tyumen holds a significant place in Russian history. It was the first Russian settlement established in Siberia. In 1585, the Cossack ataman Yermak Timofeyevich conquered the area. At that time, the land was part of the Siberia Khanate. The fighting destroyed the existing capitals of the Khanate. However, Tyumen was later re-founded by order of Tsar Feodor I in 1586.
As time passed, Tyumen became a center for trade and industry. By the 18th century, it connected Siberia and China to Central Russia. The city saw many technological milestones during the 19th century. In 1836, the first steam boat in Siberia was built in Tyumen.

The 20th century brought both growth and intense challenges. During the 1930s, Tyumen became a major Soviet industrial center. It produced furniture, leather goods, and ships. During World War II, the city became a vital industrial and medical hub. In the winter of 1941, twenty-two large industrial enterprises evacuated there from Europe.
The architecture of Tyumen is an eclectic mix of different eras. There is no single dominant architectural style across the city. Many people call it the "Capital of Villages" because of the many wooden houses.
