Siberia is an immense geographical region located in North Asia.
The environment in Siberia is defined by extreme conditions and diverse landscapes. The region is famous for long, harsh winters. In January, the average temperature is approximately −25 °C (−13 °F).

Geologically, Siberia has a deep and violent history. During the Paleozoic era, it formed part of a continent called Angaraland. This landmass eventually fused with Euramerica to help form the supercontinent Pangea. One of the most significant events was the formation of the Siberian Traps. These were massive volcanic eruptions that lasted for one million years. These eruptions occurred about 251 million years ago. Some scientists believe this event caused the "Great Dying," an extinction that killed 90% of all species on Earth.
The region is also a treasure trove for paleontology due to the permafrost. The ice preserves the bodies of prehistoric animals from the Pleistocene Epoch. Scientists have discovered woolly mammoth specimens, such as Yuka, and woolly rhinoceroses in the ice.
Human history in Siberia involves many migrating groups and complex conquests. For millennia, nomads like the Huns, Scythians, and Xiongnu inhabited the land. In the 16th century, the Russian conquest began. This process started with the fall of the Khanate of Sibir in 1582. It concluded with the annexation of Chukotka in 1778. The Russians were initially drawn to the region by its valuable furs. Over time, the Russian government established forts and towns like Tobolsk to secure the territory.
As Russia expanded, the population and infrastructure of Siberia changed significantly. In the 19th century, Siberia became a major destination for internal exiles. More than 800,000 people were exiled there during that century. A massive turning point was the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway between 1891 and 1916. This railway linked the remote region to the industrializing parts of Russia. Between 1801 and 1914, roughly seven million Russians moved to Siberia from Europe. This migration helped develop industrial towns and exploit the region's extensive natural resources.
Today, Siberia is a culturally diverse region within the Russian Federation. While over 85% of the population is of European descent, many Asian ethnic minorities live there. These include Indigenous groups such as the Yakuts, Tuvans, Altai, and Khakas.
