His most famous creation is Mabel "Madea" Simmons, a tough, elderly woman. Perry also portrays her brother, Joe Simmons, and her nephew, Brian Simmons. Perry's career is defined by a process of adaptation and persistence. He often begins with a stage play and transforms it into a cinematic experience. For example, his breakthrough film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, was an adaptation of his own play. He uses his own production company, Tyler Perry Films, to maintain copyright ownership. He also writes, directs, and produces most of his major projects. This allows him to control the storytelling from the initial script to the final performance. This method has helped him build a massive body of work.

His creative output includes several distinct types of entertainment. He produces many films within the Madea franchise, such as Madea's Family Reunion and Madea Goes to Jail. He also develops scripted television series, most notably Tyler Perry's House of Payne. This sitcom follows three generations of an African American household. The show explores serious, true-to-life struggles regarding faith and love. Additionally, Perry has expanded into voice acting for animated films like The Star. He has even appeared in major Hollywood productions outside of his own creations.

Perry's path to success began with significant personal challenges. Born Emmitt Perry Jr. in New Orleans, Louisiana, he experienced a very difficult childhood. He faced abuse from his father, a man he later learned was not his biological parent. At age 16, he legally changed his name to Tyler to distance himself from his father. During his early twenties, he discovered that writing could serve as a therapeutic tool. This realization inspired him to pursue professional writing. He began by writing letters to himself, which eventually became his first musical, I Know I've Been Changed.

In 1990, Perry moved to Atlanta to pursue his theatrical ambitions. He used $12,000 of his life savings to finance his first musical performance. While the production was initially a financial failure with poor reviews, Perry did not give up. He spent six years repeatedly rewriting the musical to improve it. By 1998, he successfully restaged the play in Atlanta at the Fox Theatre. He began touring his productions on the "Chitlin' Circuit," also known as the urban theater circuit. This helped him develop a large, devoted following among African American audiences.

The financial scale of Perry's success is immense. In 2005, Forbes reported that he had sold over $100 million in tickets. He also earned approximately $30 million from video sales and $20 million from merchandise. His films and shows have cumulatively grossed more than $660 million. By 2011, Forbes listed him as the highest-paid man in entertainment, earning $130 million in one year. His estimated net worth is approximately $1 billion, making him one of the wealthiest figures in the industry.

Despite his commercial triumphs, Perry's work has faced various forms of criticism. Some critics and scholars argue that his films perpetuate negative or offensive portrayals of African Americans. Additionally, many of his films have received negative reviews from professional critics. However, his influence remains significant in the broader culture. In 2020, Time magazine included him on its list of the 100 most influential people. He has also received prestigious honors, such as the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2021.
