These animals belong to a group called Choloepus. This name comes from Ancient Greek and means "lame foot." There are two different species in this group. One is called Linnaeus's two-toed sloth. The other is Hoffmann's two-toed sloth. They are much larger than the three-toed sloth. They also have longer fur and no tail.

These sloths are special because they live mostly upside down. They cannot walk on the ground. Instead, they pull themselves hand-over-hand through the trees. This way of moving is extremely slow. They often prefer to climb down trees head first. Because they move so slowly, they have a low metabolic rate. This means their bodies use energy very slowly. They cannot shiver to stay warm like other mammals. Their body temperature often changes with the air around them.

Scientists once thought these sloths were part of a family called Megalonychidae. However, new studies of DNA have changed this idea. DNA is the code inside living things. These tests show they are actually close to extinct ground sloths. These extinct animals were in the family Mylodontidae. The two species likely split apart 6 to 7 million years ago. One group was separated by the Andes mountains. This is a very long time in history.

Two-toed sloths have very interesting bodies. They have two digits on their front limbs. They have three digits on their back limbs. They also have very few neck bones. Most mammals have seven, but these sloths have only five. Their teeth are also quite different. They have no true canine teeth. Instead, they have a tooth called a caniniform. This tooth helps them tear food. They use other teeth called molariforms to grind food.

Their diet is mostly plants like leaves and fruit. They also eat nuts, berries, and even bark. Sometimes they even eat small animals. They have a huge stomach with four chambers. This helps them ferment the plants they eat. It can take a whole month to digest one meal. They get most of their water from the leaves. Sometimes they will drink directly from rivers. Green algae grows in their fur to help them hide.
