People speak them in Eastern Siberia and Manchuria. There are about 12 living languages in this family. Only 75,000 people speak them as their first language. Many of these languages are in danger of being lost.

These languages have a long history. They likely came from one old language. This old language may have started near Lake Khanka.

Some scholars think it started near Lake Baikal. Long ago, the Jurchen people used a special script to write. They were the rulers of the Jin dynasty. Later, a leader named Nurhaci made a new alphabet for the Manchu people. Today, Manchu is a very rare language. Only 18 people in one village spoke it in 2007.

These languages have unique rules. They use a way of building words called agglutination. This means they add parts to a word to change its meaning. They also use vowel harmony. This means the sounds of the vowels in a word must match. For example, if a word starts with a certain type of vowel, the rest must match. Most Tungusic languages use a subject-object-verb order. This means the person or thing doing the action comes first.
