Tulunids

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, the Abbasid Empire was very large. It stretched from China to North Africa. Because it was so big, it was hard to rule. Some leaders in far away lands began to rule on their own.

In 868, a Turkic officer named Ahmad ibn Tulun went to Egypt. He became a leader who ruled with a lot of freedom. Ahmad made many big changes. He built a new army. He also changed the way people paid taxes. He worked well with merchants. Ahmad moved the capital to a place called al-Qata'i. There, he built the famous Ibn Tulun Mosque.
