He is a guardian of a specific place. He looks after the land and its people. Each Tudigong stays in one area. A god for one town is not the god for another town.

He often looks like an old man. He has a long white beard and simple clothes. Many people call him "grandfather." This shows they feel close to him. Some believe a person becomes a Tudigong after they die. This happens if they did great things for their town.

Tudigong has a wife named Tudipo. She is the Grandmother of the Soil. Some stories say she watches how he gives out blessings. People visit temples to pray for wealth or health.

They may also pray to him before a burial. This is to say thanks for using his land. In Taiwan, people celebrate his birthday in the second month. They also have a festival in the eighth month. Many temples for Tudigong are found in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
