Sometimes, these mountains are covered in white snow.

A long time ago, people lived in this area. They grew corn and beans. They used canals to move water to their crops. Later, the Spanish built a military fort there in 1775. The name Tucson comes from the O'odham people. It means "the base of the hill is black." This refers to a hill called Sentinel Peak.

Tucson has changed many times. It was once part of Mexico. Then, it became part of the United States. Today, it is the second largest city in Arizona. It is home to the University of Arizona. The city is also famous for science. People use big telescopes there to study space. This is why some call it Optics Valley.
