The history of the area began long before the city was officially founded. In 1781, Spanish officials granted José Salvador de la Garza 59 leagues of land. He used this land to build a ranch northwest of the current city area. During the early 1800s, residents called the area "los tejidos," meaning pasturelands. After Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836, the settler presence grew. In 1848, American entrepreneur Charles Stillman founded the city.

Cotton was moved through the Mexican port of Bagdad to avoid Union blockades. In November 1863, Union troops marched toward the city to take Fort Brown.
