The tsetse fly is a large biting insect found in tropical Africa.

These flies are known as obligate parasites. This means they must live by feeding on the blood of vertebrate animals. They are very important to study because they act as biological vectors. A vector is something that carries a disease from one place to another.

Tsetse flies carry tiny organisms called trypanosomes. These can cause sickness in both humans and animals. This has a big impact on public health and the economy in sub-Saharan Africa.

You can recognize a tsetse fly by looking at a few special features.

tsetse foldedWings

When they are resting, they fold their wings completely over their bodies. One wing rests directly on top of the other wing.

They also have a long mouthpart called a proboscis. This thin structure points straight forward from the bottom of the head.

If you look closely at their wings, you might see a hatchet cell. This is a shape in the middle of the wing that looks like a meat cleaver.

Their antennae also have special branched hairs on them.

The life of a tsetse fly follows a very unusual path.

Instead of laying many eggs, a female fertilizes only one egg at a time. She keeps the egg inside her uterus to protect it. The baby grows inside the mother as a larva. The mother even feeds the baby a special milky substance. When the larva is ready, it leaves the mother and crawls into the ground. It then builds a hard case called a puparium. The fly stays inside this shell for about 35 days before emerging as an adult.

Scientists have learned a lot about these insects over many years.

In 2014, researchers even sequenced the genome of the species Glossina morsitans. There are 23 different species of tsetse flies living in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula today. These species are often grouped into three types: savannah flies, forest flies, and riverine flies.

Fossilized tsetse flies have even been found in rocks from the Paleogene period. These fossils were discovered in places like Germany and the United States.

Tsetse flies are quite tough compared to other insects.

A housefly is easy to hit with a swatter, but a tsetse fly is much harder to crush. They have a very large crop, which is a part of their gut. This allows them to take a blood meal that is equal to their own weight.

This large meal provides the energy needed for the mother to feed her growing offspring. Just like many animals, tsetse flies rely on finding the right food to survive and grow.
