A man named Leon Trotsky lived long ago.

A man named Leon Trotsky had big ideas.

Leon Trotsky was a famous Russian leader.

Trotskyism is a way of thinking about politics and society. It is a branch of Marxism and Leninism. This set of ideas was made by a Russian leader named Leon Trotsky. He worked with other members of the Left Opposition. They also formed a group called the Fourth International. Trotsky believed in many big ideas about how people should live. He wanted workers to have control over their own production. He also believed in a way called socialist internationalism. This means workers should work together across many different countries.
One of the most important ideas in Trotskyism is permanent revolution. Trotsky thought that a revolution in one place could not stay small. He argued that the working class must lead the change. In Russia, he believed workers would win against old rulers. Then, they would help workers in other advanced countries. This would create a chain of changes all over the world. He also wanted a transitional program. This is a plan to move from daily struggles to a new society. He wanted a system where workers could vote for their leaders.
Leon Trotsky was a very important person in Russian history. He was a close friend of Vladimir Lenin. They worked together during the Russian Revolution. Trotsky was also the leader of the Red Army. He played a leading role in the October Revolution. Some historians believe Lenin wanted Trotsky to be his successor. They say Lenin might have made him Vice-leader of the Soviet Union. Trotsky also followed the ideas of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. He was a very busy intellectual and revolutionary.
History changed for Trotsky in the 1920s. A man named Joseph Stalin rose to power in the Soviet Union. Stalin and Trotsky became bitter enemies. In October 1927, Stalin ordered Trotsky to be removed from power. Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party in November 1927. He was sent away to Alma-Ata in January 1928. Then, he was forced to leave the Soviet Union in February 1929. While in exile, he started the Fourth International in 1938. He lived in Mexico for a time. Sadly, he was killed in Mexico City on August 21, 1940.
Today, people still study the ideas of Trotskyism. Many different groups around the world follow his teachings. These groups are often found on the left side of politics. They are different from the leaders who ruled the Soviet Union under Stalin. Trotskyists often criticize the way the Soviet Union was run. They believe it became too much about a small group of leaders. Instead, they want more democracy for the people. You can still see people using these ideas in many places. They work to make sure workers have a loud voice.
Trotskyism is a political ideology and a specific branch of Marxism and Leninism. It was developed by the Russian revolutionary and intellectual Leon Trotsky. He worked alongside members of the Left Opposition and the Fourth International to define these ideas. Trotskyism is characterized by a specific approach to social revolution and international cooperation. It seeks to organize society through the leadership of the working class. This ideology is generally positioned on the left side of the political spectrum.
The core of Trotskyist theory is the concept of permanent revolution. This idea was formulated by Trotsky in 1905 to explain how revolution works in less developed countries. Before this, some believed a socialist revolution could only happen in advanced capitalist societies. Trotsky argued that in countries like Russia, the working class must lead the charge. They would first overthrow the feudal system and the old ruling classes. However, the revolution would not stop at national borders. The working class would then seek to spread socialism to advanced capitalist nations worldwide. This creates a continuous, or "permanent," process of social change.
Trotskyism relies on several specific mechanisms to achieve its goals. One key method is the use of a transitional program. This program consists of demands that bridge the gap between daily struggles and the ultimate goal of socialism. Another mechanism is the support for proletarian internationalism. This means workers must act together across different nations to succeed. Trotsky also advocated for a vanguard party of the proletariat. This is a dedicated group that leads the working class during a revolution. He believed in a dictatorship of the proletariat to manage the transition to a new society.
There are distinct differences between Trotskyism and other forms of socialism, such as Stalinism. Stalinism promoted the theory of "socialism in one country." This idea suggested that a single nation could build socialism on its own. Trotskyists strongly opposed this, favoring the permanent revolution instead. They also criticized the bureaucracy that developed in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin. Trotskyists argue that this bureaucracy was anti-democratic and stifled the power of the workers. They advocate for mass soviet democratization and workers' control of production. This means workers should have a direct say in how their workplaces are run.
The history of Trotskyism is deeply tied to the early years of the Soviet Union. Leon Trotsky was a major leader during the Russian Revolution and the subsequent Russian Civil War. He served as the paramount leader of the Red Army. He was a close personal and ideological ally of Vladimir Lenin. Many historians believe Lenin intended for a collective leadership after his death. Some suggest Lenin wanted Trotsky to hold an important role or even become Vice-leader. However, power struggles emerged in the 1920s. In October 1927, Joseph Stalin ordered Trotsky to be removed from power.
Following his removal, Trotsky faced a period of exile and persecution. He was expelled from the All-Union Communist Party in November 1927. In 1928, he was exiled to Alma-Ata, which is now known as Almaty. By February 1929, he was expelled from the USSR entirely. While in exile, he founded the Fourth International in 1938. He believed the existing Third International had been lost to Stalinism. Eventually, Trotsky moved to Mexico City. On August 20, 1940, he was attacked by a Spanish-born agent named Ramón Mercader. Trotsky died in a hospital the following day. This event is widely considered a political assassination.
Today, Trotskyism remains a significant influence in various political movements. It is often studied within the context of historical materialism and scientific socialism. These fields view history as a series of conscious processes driven by class struggle. Trotskyists continue to use the ideas of the Left Opposition to critique modern political systems. They focus on issues like economic planning, industrialization, and democratic rights. While many original members were lost during the Great Purges of 1937–1938, the ideology persists. It continues to connect the struggle for workers' rights to the broader goal of global social transformation.
