Tribunal

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A tribunal is a special group with the power to judge. They listen to claims or settle disputes between people. Many people think a tribunal is just another word for a court. However, they are often different from regular courts. Tribunals are usually less formal in how they work. They might not follow the same strict rules of evidence. This helps them handle specific types of problems more quickly.

Tribunals work in a way that is often simpler than a court. In places like Australia, they use a simplified legal procedure. The people in charge are often lawyers rather than judges. These members might only work at the tribunal part-time. They often spend most of their time representing other clients. Because they are less formal, people can often represent themselves. This makes it easier for regular people to speak for themselves.

The word tribunal has a very long history. It comes from the tribunes of the Classical Roman Republic. These tribunes were important leaders or magistrates. Originally, the word described the office held by these tribunes. It also described the physical platform where they sat. Being on a raised platform showed their high position. This helped show they had authority over the law.

Many different countries use tribunals for many different jobs. In India, there are tribunals for taxes and food safety. The Armed Forces Tribunal was made in 2007. In Bangladesh, they help make trials go faster. Brazil uses the name for its higher appeal courts. The highest court there is the Supremo Tribunal Federal. In New Zealand, there are more than 100 different tribunals. The Waitangi Tribunal even uses Māori customs to help its work.

Tribunals connect to many parts of our daily lives. In the Catholic Church, they handle matters of church law. Some tribunals in the health sector help with making decisions. In Canada, some tribunals help people who rent homes. Even sports use this word, like the AFL Tribunal in Australia. These groups help solve problems that might be too small for a big court. They make sure that specific issues get the right kind of attention.
