It helps shape how the country works today. This document is often called the nation's founding document. It describes the relationship between the British Crown and the Māori people. For a long time, people have debated what the treaty actually means. It remains a central part of the country's identity and laws.

The treaty was created through a process of writing and signing. First, the document was written in English. Then, a missionary named Henry Williams translated it into the Māori language.

After the translation, the document was taken to Waitangi. On February 6, 1840, the first signing took place there. Captain William Hobson signed as a representative for the British Crown. Many Māori chiefs then signed the document as copies moved around the country.

History shows that the treaty was made during a busy time. The British wanted to formalize their presence in New Zealand. They wanted to regulate land sales and control settlement. At the same time, some Māori leaders asked the British for protection. They were worried about interests from France. The New Zealand Company was also working to start a colony. These different goals led to the need for a formal agreement.

There are many specific facts about the people who signed. About 530 to 540 Māori signed the Māori version of the treaty. This group included at least 13 women. However, only 39 people signed the English version. Many chiefs used an X to sign their names. Some even drew parts of their moko, which is a facial tattoo.

The two versions used different words for important ideas. The English text used the word "sovereignty." The Māori text used the word "kawanatanga," which means governance. This difference caused many disagreements later on.

Today, the treaty is linked to many modern laws and rights. In 1975, the government passed the Treaty of Waitangi Act.

This act created the Waitangi Tribunal. The Tribunal helps decide issues regarding the two different texts. Since the 1990s, the government has worked on settlements to fix past mistakes. These settlements have totaled about $1 billion. The treaty is now a key part of how Māori and the state work together.
