Translation is a way to move meaning between languages. It acts like a bridge for ideas.

When people move written words, it is called translating. When they move spoken words, it is called interpreting.

Translators work very hard to find the right words. They often use two different ways to work. One way is called metaphrase. This is a word-for-word way. The other way is called paraphrase. This uses different words to keep the same meaning.

Some people say a translator is like an artist. They must find a balance to make the text work.

Sometimes, a language does not have a word for a new idea. Translators might borrow a word from the original language. This can make a language richer.

Translation is very old. In ancient times, the Babylonians made it a job. In Baghdad, a famous place called Bayt al-Hikma helped translate many books. Translation helps us share stories and knowledge across the whole world.
