Transference

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes we feel old feelings for new people. We might feel love or anger for someone today. These feelings actually belong to people from our past. This is called transference. It happens without us knowing.

This often happens with people from our childhood. You might feel a certain way about a friend. This might be because they remind you of a parent. You might also mistrust a new person. This could happen if they sound like an old partner. We see patterns from our past in our present life.

Sigmund Freud was a famous doctor. He studied this idea. He thought transference was a great tool for therapy. In therapy, a patient might direct feelings toward their doctor. They might feel trust or even rage. Doctors use these feelings to learn about the patient. They look for old conflicts from the past.

Doctors must also watch their own feelings. This is called countertransference. It is when the doctor feels strong emotions toward the patient. A good doctor studies these feelings. This helps them stay helpful and calm. It helps them understand the patient even better.
