A transcontinental railroad is a set of tracks that crosses a whole continent.

These rails often connect different oceans or borders. They help move people and heavy goods across huge lands. This makes it possible to explore and live in new areas. Many of these networks act as the backbone for travel. They connect places that were once too far apart to reach easily.

How these railways work depends on the track gauge. The gauge is the distance between the two rails. Sometimes, different companies use different widths for their tracks. This creates a break of gauge, which is a hard job for travelers. When this happens, people must move goods from one train to another. This can be very slow and difficult.

To fix this, engineers try to use one standard gauge. This allows a single train to travel the whole way.

History shows how these lines changed the world. In the United States, Asa Whitney shared a plan in 1845. The first major line was built between 1863 and 1869. It linked Council Bluffs, Iowa, to the San Francisco Bay.

Many famous railways exist around the globe today. The Trans-Siberian Railway is the longest in the world. It is over 9,000 kilometers long. It starts in Moscow and ends at Vladivostok by the Pacific Ocean. In Australia, the Trans-Australian Railway was completed in 1917. It connects Port Augusta to Kalgoorlie. Another line runs from Adelaide to Darwin. This route was finished in 2004 after many years of work.

A special train called The Ghan runs this path.

These railroads link to many things you might know. They are like giant metal paths for moving the world. In Europe, the Orient Express is a famous historic train. In Africa, many plans aim to link different countries. Some projects want to connect the Red Sea to the Gulf of Guinea. These tracks help connect different cultures and distant lands. They turn huge continents into one connected home.
