It crossed the wide Danube river. An architect named Apollodorus designed it. The bridge helped Roman troops reach Dacia.

Building it was a big job. The workers had to move the river water. They dug a canal to lead the water away. This made the river bed dry. Engineers then drove wooden pillars into the ground. They built twenty tall pillars. These pillars were made of bricks and mortar. They used a special cement called pozzolana.

Workers used oak wood for the arches. The bridge was very high. This let ships pass underneath. Many Roman soldiers helped build it. They even carved their unit names into the bricks. The bridge lasted for 165 years. Later, the wooden parts were taken down. Today, you can still see some ruins. Only the entrance pillars remain on the river banks.
