Train station

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A train station is a specialized railway facility designed for the movement of people and goods. These locations serve as essential nodes where trains stop to load or unload passengers and freight.

Most stations consist of at least one track and one platform for boarding. They also include a station building to provide ancillary services. These services might include ticket sales, waiting rooms, and baggage handling. Stations can be located at ground level, underground, or elevated above the surrounding area. Many modern stations also act as transit hubs by connecting to buses, trams, or rapid transit systems.

To understand how a station functions, one must look at the different types of tracks used. A station may feature a passing loop, which is a side track that allows trains to pass one another.

There are several specific names for these tracks based on their purpose. A station track, or house track, is a spot where trains stop to board passengers. If that track is next to a platform, it is called a platform track. Some tracks are used only for passing through without stopping, known as through tracks. Other tracks, called sidings, are used for lower-speed purposes. A refuge track is a dead-end siding used to temporarily store a disabled train.

Stations are also categorized by their physical layout and platform arrangements. A common design uses a pair of tracks with an island platform located between them. Other stations use side platforms, which are separate platforms located on the outside of the tracks. Some stations have unusual shapes due to space limits or track alignment. For example, a Keilbahnhof is a wedge-shaped station built where two lines split. There are also triangular stations where platforms are built on all three sides of a three-way junction. In some large cities, stations serve multiple rail lines at different levels to manage high traffic.

The history of railway stations shows how much travel technology has changed. The first recorded station began passenger service in 1807 in Swansea, Wales. This station, called The Mount, used horses to pull the carriages rather than engines. The oldest station for engined locomotives was in Heighington, England. It opened in 1827 and used the locomotive Locomotion No. 1.

Another important early site was the Mount Clare station in Baltimore, Maryland. It began service on 22 May 1830 as a terminus for horse-drawn rail. The Crown Street station in Liverpool, built in 1830, was the first to include a train shed.

Architecture has played a major role in how stations appear to the public. Many 19th-century stations feature grandiose, intricate designs like Baroque or Gothic styles. These large buildings were often intended to provide prestige to the city.

In contrast, modern stations often have a simple, abstract style similar to airports. This is especially true for high-speed rail networks. Examples include the Shinkansen in Japan, the TGV in France, and the ICE lines in Germany.

These newer designs focus on efficiency and clean lines.

Facilities within a station vary greatly depending on the size and location. Large, staffed stations offer a wide range of services to travelers. These can include ticket offices, automated machines, shops, and restaurants.

Some stations even provide luxury services like bars, pubs, or security offices. In large cities, these facilities might operate around the clock. In many African, South American, and Asian countries, stations also serve as hubs for public markets.

Even small locations might offer basic amenities like toilets or luggage carts.

A unique type of station is the terminus, which sits at the very end of a railway line. At a terminus, trains must end their journey or reverse direction to leave.

This layout often allows passengers to reach all platforms without crossing any tracks. In Europe, many major cities use a terminus as their primary station. To manage the reversal, drivers might move to the other end of a multiple-unit train. Alternatively, a locomotive can be detached and moved to the other end of the train using a loop track. This process ensures that trains can continue their journeys in the opposite direction efficiently.
