society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A trade secret is a special kind of business information. It might be a recipe or a way to make things. This information is valuable because it is not known by others.

Many famous companies use trade secrets. The formula for Coca-Cola is a well-known secret. The recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken is another one.

To stay protected, owners must take steps to keep the secret. They often use non-disclosure agreements. These are special papers that say a person must stay quiet. If someone steals a secret, it is called misappropriation. This is against honest business rules.

Unlike other rights, you do not need to register a trade secret. It can stay protected forever as long as it stays a secret. However, if someone finds the secret on their own, they can use it. This might happen through reverse engineering. This means they study a product to see how it was made.

In the past, laws for secrets were different. In 1817, an English court case dealt with a secret medicine. In 1868, a famous case in Massachusetts helped set rules for secrets today.
