life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A toxic injury happens when a person touches or breathes a toxin. A toxin is a harmful substance. These injuries can happen in many ways. Some people get hurt for a short time. Other people get hurt from long-term exposure. This is called chronic exposure. Some harms go away. Other harms stay in the body forever.

Some toxins affect the lungs. This can cause coughing or a tight chest. Other toxins affect the brain. This can cause headaches or dizziness. Some toxins cause skin rashes or red eyes. Asbestos is a toxin that can cause mesothelioma. This is a cancer in the lungs.

There are two main types of toxins. Environmental toxins are found in nature. Examples include mold or pesticides. Chemical toxins are often made by people. They are found in medicines or factory products. These can be very strong.

To stay safe, avoid direct contact with toxins. You can wear protective gear. This gear helps keep you safe. Keeping homes clean and dry also helps. This stops mold from growing.
