A town is a specific type of human settlement. It is generally larger than a village but smaller than a city.

Towns serve as vital hubs for their surrounding regions. They provide essential services like commerce, education, and cultural activities. Most residents in a town work in manufacturing, commerce, or public services. This differs from villages, where people often work in primary sectors like agriculture.

Defining a town is complex because criteria vary globally. Some regions use population size to make the distinction. Others look at economic character or administrative status. In the United States, many are "incorporated towns." This means they have legally defined borders and local governance, such as a police force. Other places are "unincorporated," meaning they lack their own independent government.

Cultural and legal differences create many unique definitions. In the United Kingdom, a town might have historical status from a royal charter. In Australia, many regional centers are called towns, even if they have fewer than 200 people.

In Afghanistan, the term "shār" is used for both cities and towns. In Austria, the legal system does not distinguish between villages, towns, and cities. All municipalities have equal rank, though some larger ones are symbolically called cities. For example, the city of Rattenberg has only about 400 inhabitants.

The word "town" has deep linguistic roots. It shares origins with the German "Zaun," meaning fence. It also relates to the Dutch "tuin," meaning garden or enclosure.

Originally, the word described a fortress or an enclosure. In England, a town was a small community protected by a palisade or stockade. In the Netherlands, it described a walled garden. In Old Norse, "tún" meant a grassy place between farmhouses. This history shows how settlements began as protected, enclosed spaces.

Geographers study how towns grow and change over time. Thomas Griffith Taylor proposed a classification scheme based on age and land use. He identified five distinct stages of development. "Infantile towns" have no clear zoning. "Juvenile towns" develop an area for shops. "Adolescent towns" see the appearance of factories. "Early mature towns" establish separate high-class housing. Finally, "mature towns" have defined industrial, commercial, and residential areas.

Human settlements have a very long history. Çatalhöyük is considered one of the oldest inhabited towns. It existed around 7100 BC and is now a World Heritage Site.

During the Roman era, settlements were often organized around villas. "Villa rustica" were country villas used for farming and storing production. "Pars urbana" were urban villas where lords resided. These urban villas adopted architectural forms typical of city mansions. Over time, these became centers of administrative power.

Modern life has made defining towns even more difficult. Extensive suburban growth and migration have changed the landscape. Many people now live in suburban communities that feel urban. However, they may lack the formal characteristics of a city. Some non-rural settlements, like temporary mining locations, also challenge traditional definitions. Today, the United Nations is working toward a common statistical definition. This effort aims to better categorize cities, towns, and rural areas globally.
